My upstairs laundry takes forever to dry, but the older house I had downtown never did. What changed?

The run length and direction. Central Escondido's 1940s-60s single-story homes usually vent out a garage or service-porch sidewall in a few feet, so lint has almost no chance to settle. The hillside tracts built from the 1970s through the 90s put the laundry on the second floor and push the exhaust up through the attic to a roof cap. That's a longer run with elbows, and it's moving warm wet air through an attic that cools off hard on our valley nights. Moisture condenses on the duct wall, lint sticks to it instead of blowing out, and the buildup starts partway up the run where you'd never see it from the laundry room. Long dry times on a second-floor dryer are usually that, not a failing machine.

What do you usually find on the outside cap out here?

Dust and seed. Escondido sits in an inland valley with dry hillsides and agricultural land around it, and that stuff coats exterior vent caps. Grass seed and fine dirt pack into the louvers or the screen, the flap stops swinging free, and the vent chokes from the outside in while the duct itself still looks fine. On sidewall caps at the older single-story homes we clear the louvers and check the flap actually falls shut. On roof caps we do the same from up top and look at the screen, since a screened roof cap in this dust load clogs faster than most people expect.

How soon can someone get out here?

Escondido is a regular stop for us, so most weeks we can be out within a couple of days. If your dryer is running hot, shutting off mid-cycle, or you're smelling something scorched, say so when you call and we'll try to move you up. Roof-vented two-story jobs need daylight and a dry roof, so those get scheduled in the morning block where we can.

Can you do it same day?

Sometimes, usually when there's a cancellation or when you're near another Escondido or North County stop already on the route. Sidewall runs in the older central neighborhoods are quick and easier to slot in late in the day. A second-floor laundry venting to a roof cap in one of the hillside tracts is a longer visit with roof access involved, and we'd rather book that properly than rush it at 4pm.

Why do quotes vary so much between houses here?

Because Escondido has two different setups. A single-story home from the 40s through the 60s with the dryer in the garage or on a service porch and a short run straight out the wall is about as simple as this work gets, and it prices accordingly. A hillside-tract two-story with upstairs laundry, a long attic run, elbows, and a roof cap takes more time, roof access, and usually more effort to break loose lint that's been sitting damp against the duct wall. Condition matters too. A vent that's never been serviced and has years of dust and seed packed at the cap is more work than one that gets done regularly. We'll ask where the dryer sits and where it exhausts before quoting so the number reflects your house, not an average.
