What a dryer vent inspection actually looks for

Why inspect if the lint trap looks clean? Because the trap catches maybe half of it. The rest packs the duct. An inspection maps the run first: length, number of elbows, material, where it terminates. A camera goes in from the hood end. Airflow gets checked at the discharge, not at the machine. That order matters, because a strong dryer can mask a bad duct.

Carlsbad routes fall into a few patterns. Short sidewall garage vents in older single-story homes. Long second-floor-to-roof vertical runs in 1990s-2000s tract two-stories. Interior closet runs in condos and attached townhomes. Crawl-under and eave discharges on hillside inland lots.

Check it yourself first. Run the dryer, then go outside and feel the hood. Weak or cold air is the tell. Two and three cycles for towels, a hot humid laundry room, a burning odor, or the machine's own vent-blocked alert all say the same thing.

Annual makes sense for a household of four on a long upstairs-to-roof run. Every 12-18 months for short garage sidewall runs. More often where a condo shares a chase, or where pets shed heavily. If the inspection finds crushed foil, cleaning it is temporary. That section wants replacing with rigid metal instead.
