We back up to open chaparral and I keep finding foxtails and brush debris around the outside of the house. Can that get into the dryer vent?

Yes, and it's one of the more common things we pull out in Poway. Exterior hoods sit low enough on many of these tract homes that seed heads, dry grass and fine dust from the hillsides work their way into the flap or pack the screen behind it. Foxtails are especially good at wedging in and staying put. Combine that with lint coming from the inside and the flap stops closing fully, which then lets more debris in. If your hood is on a wall facing open ground or you've had ash settle on the house after a fire event, the outlet end is usually the first place we look.

My laundry room is off the hallway in the middle of the house. Where does that vent actually go?

Almost always up into the attic and across to a roof cap. That interior laundry room layout is standard in Poway's 70s-through-90s tract homes, and because there's no exterior wall behind the dryer, the builder ran the duct vertically and then horizontally through the attic. Those runs are longer than a straight wall vent, they have at least two elbows, and lint settles in the horizontal section where airflow slows. We clean from both ends where we can — pulling from the roof cap and brushing back from the dryer connection — because working only from one side on a run that shape tends to leave a plug behind in the middle.

What makes the price go up or down on a house like mine?

The two things that move it in Poway are roof access and run length. A single-story tract home with a reachable roof cap and a moderate attic run is straightforward. A two-story with a steeper roof, or a longer run that crosses most of the attic, takes more setup and more time. Semi-rural properties with detached or converted laundry spaces can add distance too. Condition matters as well — a vent that hasn't been touched since the house was built, or one packed with brush debris at the hood, is a different job than routine maintenance. We look at the setup before we start so you know what you're dealing with, not after.

Can you come out same day?

Often, yes, especially if you're flexible about the window. Poway is compact enough that if we already have a crew working the inland valley we can usually add a stop. Same-day is harder when the job needs roof work and we're getting a late call in summer, since we won't rush ladder work on a hot roof at the end of the day. Our inland air is so dry that clothes dry fast anyway. Do I still need this done?

What you'd notice instead is a hotter laundry room, the outside of the dryer warm to the touch, or lint showing up in places it shouldn't. Meanwhile the attic run keeps collecting, the exterior flap keeps catching brush and dust, and nothing about our climate clears it out. Most Poway homes do fine on an annual check; households doing heavy laundry or with a long attic run to the roof may want it sooner.
