My dryer sits in the back porch and vents straight out the wall — that's a short run, so why would it clog?

Short runs clog differently than long ones. In the older downtown and South O cottages, the duct often punches through a wood or stucco wall with no real hood on the outside, just an open hole or a flimsy flap. Lint packs into that last few inches where it meets the wall, and because the run is short, people assume it can't be the problem. We see plenty of these bungalows where the duct is clear and the wall termination is fully blocked. It's also common to find the vent aimed into a garage corner or a crawl area rather than actually outside, which is worth correcting while we're there.

The flapper on the outside of my house is rusted and won't close. Is that part of the job?

Near the coast this is the single most common thing we find. Salt spray eats through the metal flappers and hinges, and once they seize open or fall off entirely, you get birds, spiders, and blown-in debris packing the duct from the outside in. We clean the duct either way, but if the exterior termination is corroded past the point of closing properly, we'll tell you and can replace it with a hood better suited to beach exposure. Replacing a rusted cover without clearing what's built up behind it doesn't fix anything.

Our laundry is upstairs and vents through the roof — is that harder to clean?

It takes longer than a sidewall vent, yes. The two-story homes in east Oceanside and Rancho del Oro typically have the laundry on the upper floor with a vertical run to a roof cap, and lint settles back down that vertical section over time. We clean from the dryer end and, where the roof is safe to access, from the cap as well so nothing gets pushed up and left. These are also the runs where a crushed or disconnected section inside a wall cavity hides longest, since you can't see any of it from either end.

How soon can someone get out here?

Usually within a few days for standard scheduling. Same-day is sometimes possible, more often on a sidewall vent in the older single-story tracts inland of I-5 than on a two-story roof vent, which needs more time on site. If your dryer is running hot, shutting off mid-cycle, or you're smelling something scorched, say so when you call — that moves you up rather than into the normal queue.

What makes one Oceanside house cost more than another for this?

Mostly the vent configuration, not the size of the home. A short back-porch run in a South O cottage is on the lower end of what we do. A two-story upstairs laundry venting through the roof takes more time and roof access, so it lands higher. Beyond that, condition matters: a rental near Camp Pendleton that's turned over a few times with heavy daily loads and no cleaning history can be genuinely packed, and if a corroded exterior hood needs replacing, that's a part. We look at the actual run and tell you what it involves before we start pulling anything apart.
