My townhome is only about 20 years old and I've never had the dryer vent cleaned. Does a newer home really need it?

Age of the house matters less than the shape of the duct. Most of the tract and attached product built here from the 1990s on puts the laundry on the second floor, which means the lint has to travel up through the attic and out a roof jack instead of straight through a wall. That vertical run plus the elbows it takes to get there is where lint packs in, and it does it slowly enough that you don't notice until drying times creep. A home that's never been serviced is usually the one with the most buildup, not the least.

How soon can you get out here?

Usually within a few days for a standard San Marcos appointment. If you're in one of the attached townhome or condo communities where we need building or HOA access to reach a roof, add time for arranging that. Rental units near CSUSM are often quicker to schedule when the tenants are around during the day, but harder when nobody can let us in — if you're a landlord booking on a tenant's behalf, sort out access before you call and we can usually slot you in faster.

What actually goes wrong with dryer vents in San Marcos?

Two patterns. In the newer hillside homes, it's the roof termination — the jack gets clogged at the flap, or a bird or pest gets into it, and the whole vertical run backs up from the top down. Second-floor laundry rooms also tend to have the duct crushed or kinked where it turns out of the wall behind the machine, especially if the dryer's been shoved back hard against it. Garage-laundry homes and ground-floor units are the easiest to fit in on short notice. If your dryer has stopped drying entirely or you're smelling something hot, say that when you call and we'll treat it as urgent rather than routine.
